(titlul e provizoriu)
Darkness. She was walking through an unfamiliar dark forest, on an unfamiliar path, in unfamiliar clothes. Slowly pacing, not knowing what was going on, how she got there or where she was heading to. Her vision was blurry but she did not take notice to it and continued walking, step after step, into an unending ocean of darkness, guided by a narrow path.
Over and over she inspected the white room, but there was no sign of a door or anything else for that matter. The room was empty but her destiny implied that she had to sit at a table inside this room and so, a wooden table and chair were there. The girl touched the table’s soft surface wondering if it had just appeared, or if it was there all along, but she couldn’t see it. Her thoughts wandered aimlessly for a while before she obediently sat on the chair next to her, waiting for something. She waited for a while, but eventually got bored and considered doing something to help the time pass. As such, she took the book in front of her in her soft hands, wondering if, like the table and chair, it was always there or if it had just appeared because she wanted to read something. Keeping her thoughts to herself, the girl held the book and examined it carefully. It had black covers and no trace of a title or anything else that would indicate which book it was, the only thing she could discern was that it had a royal aura surrounding it.
“Open it.” A soft, distant voice whispered.
The girl turned around frightened, letting go of the book as it was a poisonous snake and inspected the room for the source of the whisper, but found nothing more than there already was, a white room that slowly started to fade away.
The girl named Celeste woke up from the dream suddenly, feeling drained and weak; almost as tired as she was when she went to bed. The sheets were wet with her sweat and the room was still dark, indicating that, just like every other night over the course of the last week or so, she had woken up early because of her dreams. Celeste got out of bed and started shivering as the mid-December cold, amplified by the fact that her clothes were wet, surrounded her vulnerable body in an attempt to drain away the heat from her. She narrowed her eyes looking at her hands shivering, then looked away and started walking towards the bathroom, picking up her glasses from the night stand next to her bed.
The cold was painful on her skin, but she made no effort to hurry, walking slowly as floating she wondered if walking at the bottom of the ocean would feel like this. The black haired girl lived alone in a small apartment, close to the university she attended. The apartment she lived in was comprised of a medium sized room, a kitchen and a bathroom. At first she believed the room was pleasant and warm, but a few weeks ago she started to hear scratches, footsteps and water dripping. Then shadows started to move around that disappeared when she turned the light on, shapes of birds, dogs and other animals moving on the walls. Soon after that the dreams appeared, always the same. She walks through a dark forest, ends up in a white room, finds a book then hears the whisper and wakes up.
In the mirror in front of her, the blurry image of her face is reflected, like inviting her into an endless dream but she just smiles mockingly and lets the night dress fall off her frail, shivering body as she enters the shower and turns the hot water on. In just a minute, her body is relieved of the winter’s cold grasp as the warm water envelops her, washing away part of the fatigue. Celeste has always been a lonely person; she always buried herself in books and studying, always following through her parent’s decisions, never wanting anything for herself. She graduated high school and got in a good university that her parents chose for her, started living on her own and never doing anything by herself. She had watched her life pass by without reacting in any way, just walking forward forever, without any wish or dream that was her own.
The girl took her glasses and went back into the room to get dressed. A small shadow moved before she turned the light in the room on, but she didn’t take notice to it and just got dressed and left the house without eating.
Having taken a long shower, the time passed and it was now quite well lit outside. Celeste walked into a snowy landscape, a sea of stained white that painfully reminded her of her dream, causing her to let out a barely heard sigh. Celeste stood for a moment in front of the entrance, looking up at the gray sky, thinking it resembled a sea of nothingness, trying to absorb her thoughts and herself in it. The young girl smiled at that thought. “There’s nothing to absorb, I do not exist; I am no one.”
Step after step, she slowly retraced the path she always takes while going to the university she attends to, path that takes her through a lonely park, withered by the decaying touch of time. Her movements stopped for a ocazie and she watched the still scenery in silence, seeming like she did not want to disturb the park’s peace. As usual, there was no one there and the perfect sheet of snow covering the ground indicated that no one had been there for a while. Celeste smiled sadly and left, thinking of that park and how lively it must have been at some point in time, yet now it lies there forgotten by everyone. “That is the fate of everything in this cold world”, she said, as her lips slipped, then resumed her slow, lonely walk to the university.
Ok, author's notes.

Aproape.

Next to who?
_________________ Taste the salt you breathed

Having finally arrived, the building that hosted the classes revealed itself before her. It was a large building with a medieval look to it, vaguely resembling a castle and the thought of that left Celeste with a sad smile, slightly mocking her life. Snow covered everything, enveloped entirely; the white world around her seemed like an endless dream.
“What’s with this snow?” a voice beside her echoed, tearing her away from her thoughts, bringing her back to the cold reality “It hasn’t snowed around here for about ten years and now it just doesn’t stop.”
“Oh, come on, it’s nice isn’t it?” a girl cheerfully said, but Celeste wasn’t listening, as the words of that person froze her in place.
Why is it she never found the unending fall of snow odd, she had lived there all her life and saw snow only once or twice; why now? The moving shadows, the scratches, the dreams, the snow, were all these connected in some odd way?
Her walking figure was almost completely faded in the crowd, being noticed and glanced upon merely by one person, a silhouette watching her from above with a curious look in its eyes.
“So, it was you… Celeste.”
Celeste had once again found herself in the library. Books were always her refuge and now, more than ever, she felt like she needed that refuge. Even though it was a prestigious university, only few students immersed themselves in reading and thus, the library was as desolate as always, the only movement being the librarian’s eyes, moving across sentences of an old book.
Noticing Celeste’s presence she smiled and put her book away, greeting the girl that had visited the library over the past semester on a daily basis.
“Good morning Celeste,” she said, in a soft, nearly whispered voice “you look a bit pale, didn’t you get enough sleep?”
“Good morning Helen, I’m quite fine actually, and you?” Celeste responded, wondering if it was truly that visible or if the blond girl had made a wild guess.
“I’m fine, thank you,” Helen said, smiling warmly “do you wish for a certain book? I’ll bring it for you if you want to.”
“No, that’s fine, thank you, I’ll browse around for something,” Celeste said, wishing to end the conversation as quickly as possible.
“As you wish,” Helen said, returning to her book.
Celeste turned around and started walking towards the shelves, but caught the glance of a boy, with a black book opened in his hand, watching her. He was taller than her, with negru hair and a chain attached to his belt. Celeste noticed he was reading a book from the occult section of the library.
“Well, I always wondered what kind of creep would read those books,” she whispered to herself, walking out of his sight, between bookshelves “I guess that solves it.” She continued, noting to herself to stay away from him.
After deciding on a title, she walked out to the reading area and noticed the odd boy exchanging a few words with the librarian then leaving in a rush as the beautiful, blonde librarian returned once again to her book. For a moment, Celeste stopped, watching the boy leaving then glancing over to Helen that was immersed in the book in front of her. “Was it just my imagination?” she thought, unable to shake the feeling that the two knew each other well.
Moments later Celeste stood at a table, with her book still unopened. “So you’ll deny me even this small refuge, huh?” she asked her mind, but even though she wasn’t expecting one, she was disappointed that there was no answer from her mind. “Well, I guess I should be glad no one answered, schizophrenia is the last thing I need.”
The silence was painful, her mind couldn’t focus and now she was denied her only refuge. The young black haired girl that had worn glasses all her life looked up at the ceiling and breathed deeply. She wondered why no one noticed her, she wondered why she had no real friends, she wondered why she had never had a boyfriend, she wondered why the world looked so gray and where her knight in shining armor was and why he wasn’t there to bring color to her life. She laughed mockingly at that thought, “Like anything like that would happen to someone like me…”
Celeste was torn away from her thoughts by the sound of footsteps behind her and as she turned, the odd boy was once again walking through the silent library, only stopping when he got in front of the librarian. She found it odd that someone would be so suddenly interested in books, there was something else, could that person be related somehow?
“Ugh… am I getting paranoid?” she whispered to herself “all these thoughts of conspiracies, what’s happening to me? Am I finally losing it?”
“Err, excuse me,” a male voice said “may I talk to you?”
Celeste looked in the direction of the voice and saw the boy that was reading a book from the occult section looking down at her with a worried expression on his face. She paused for a moment, wondering what it was that he wanted, but decided to just ask him.
“Yes, can I help you with something?” She said looking in his dark brown eyes and noticing they looked unusually kind, for the kind of person she thought he was. He bit his lip, took a deep breath and handed her a white envelope.
“Please read it,” he said and bowed slightly then left in a hurry. Celeste was left dumbfounded and if Helen wouldn’t have walked over to talk to her, she would have probably remained in shock for a long time.
“Celeste,” she enthusiastically said “is that a love letter?”
The black haired girl didn’t answer; she just looked at the white envelope showing no reaction. Helen snapped her fingers in front of Celeste’s eyes but to no avail and so decided to take the focus of her attention away from her and read the contents out loud.
“Hello Celeste, my name is Caden. I have something to tell you in private and I’m anticipating that Helen will read the letter, so can you please come alone at “Firefly Café? I’ll be waiting for you there at 17:00, Caden.” Helen finished reading the letter out loud and raised an eyebrow muttering the word “wiseass”.
Celeste looked at Helen, showing her an expressionless face, like always and tilted her head a bit, before finally speaking.
“It’s a trick…” the dark haired girl with glasses said, “I’ve never seen him before and he’s never seen me before, there’s no way he’d have any business with me.” Celeste’s thoughts drifted back at the sight of that boy, Caden, he introduced himself. Why would such an unordinary person have any interest, romantic or not, in her?
“Still…” Celeste though and her heart started beating a bit faster at the thought that maybe there was someone in this world that had any interest in her. However the harsh reality caught up with her, there wasn’t anyone like that; she was alone in the crowd, like always. Blending in the crowd, losing her identity, losing her will, losing herself entirely, fading away in the mass of grey with nothing and no one to confirm her identity, her life.
“Well, I can’t really argue with that,” Helen said, throwing the letter on the table “but you’ve got nothing to lose, right? Just go and listen to what he has to say”
“Didn’t he tell you anything, I saw you two talking a few times,” Celeste said, recalling the sight of Caden speaking to Helen.
“No, the first time he asked if there were any books on shadow demons,” Helen said, triggering in Celeste’s mind a recollection of the nights she had faced the moving shadows on the walls “then, the other time he asked for a pen and wrote that letter while I was trying to catch a glimpse of what he was writing. So we’re not that well acquainted, I just know he’s a psychology student like you, just a year older.”
Celeste was a bit shocked at the news but the images wouldn’t leave her mind, moreover they were accompanied by images from her dreams. She took a deep breath and decided to meet with Caden, for no other reason but the mention he was researching shadow demons. She needed to know, she needed him to tell her that it was merely a hobby and that such things were impossible, she needed him to assure her there was nothing wrong and all those things were just her imagination, results of stress and lack of sleep.
The grey sky was replaced by a dark one and the streets were now busy as people wandered around, enjoying the end of the week and the relaxation it brought with it. Celeste was walking through the town, looking for a café she had never seen before, vaguely wondering why she was doing it, but reassuring herself it was just curiosity and that she had nothing better to do anyway.
The street lights were lit, even though the sun had not yet set and to a young glasses wearing girl, it seemed almost pretty, almost like a sight from another world, different from her desolate monochromatic world.
By the time she arrived at the café Caden spoke about in the letter, she was half an hour late and the sun had just set, allowing darkness to envelop the city. Firefly Café was a warm place, located in a resolute area, giving an intimate feeling to it. Celeste walked inside and noticed it had a comfortable and intimate look to it.
Looking around she noticed him smiling from a spot near a window and started walking to that place, feeling highly uncomfortable as it was the first time she had ever met a boy in such a place.
“Sorry I’m late,” she said, even though she noticed he didn’t seem upset by it.
“It’s alright, I anticipated it so I postponed ordering for a bit,” Caden said, smiling at her “I’ll go order now, there’s something I’d like you to try, I’m sure you’ll like it.”
Celeste thought it was a bit rude of him to do that but kept silent, that wasn’t the reason she had went there with him. As he went to order, Celeste took her glasses off and wiped them as they had become blurry from the sudden change in temperature.
“Here,” Caden said, placing a cup of tea in front of her “it’s rose flavored green tea, it’ll warm you up” Celeste looked down at the cup of steaming tea, then looked at him.
“Why did you ask me to come here?” she asked him and noticed his expression changed to a surprised one, but soon after he became expressionless.
“Well, I thought we could have some idle conversation before that, but if you insist I’ll cut to the chase,” he said and Celeste gave a barely visible nod “you’ve been having reoccurring dreams, right?”
Celeste’s eyes widened and her jaw dropped a few millimeters but she kept silent, from shock or due to the fact that once Caden started speaking, she felt compelled to listen. Where had he found that out, why was it that it interested him; all these questions waited patiently in her mind for him to talk.
“I’m guessing I hit the mark. You’ve also had odd things happen recently, things that shouldn’t happen, things that shouldn’t be possible?” he said and smiled once again “It’s the reason you came today, isn’t it?”
Celeste’s heart was beating rapidly and she was at a loss for words. In all his words there was truth, apart from one part. That was not why she went there, that was not what she wanted him to say; she hated him for betraying her and telling her something so absurd. Her hand clutched the jacket next to her and as she stood, she yelled at him.
“That’s not true, leave me alone you freak!” her voice boomed in the café and as she ran outside, she heard Caden yell “Don’t open it!” So he knew about the book too, it wasn’t surprising, he knew about everything else, he might even be the one causing it. Would that mean that opening the book would break his curse? She didn’t know, she didn’t care, all she wanted was to get further away from him, further away from everything. “Why me?” she thought, as tears formed below her eyes.
